The Atelier

  • Our Inspiration

At the end of the 19th century, a small group of likeminded artists turned their backs on the fast pace of industrialisation and travelled back to the joy of the slow craft, the handmade, the beautifully imperfect.

The artists of the Arts and Crafts movement looked for purpose, proportion, a revival of the lost crafts and a return to honesty of materials and labour.

  • Handcrafted Clothing

When asking ourselves what clothing should be like, two things came to our mind. It should be beautiful. And it should be handcrafted. Just like the artists before us, we wanted to handcraft from natural materials, with techniques often neglected for their slowness, with practical honest forms that enhance the texture, the colour, the beauty of the fabric. We longed for this because we find that objects made with care, attention and time have a presence like no other. They have a soul.

  • The Atelier

Quiet Grey Atelier is a place of calm creation, dignified labour, and honest aesthetics pursuits. We handcraft to connect with life, to be human, and to surround ourselves with objects made with love and pride. We hope you will rally with us – for detail, for texture, and for the simple beauty of thoughtful clothes.

Our process

All the designs were made by us, gathering inspiration from fashion shows, photographs, and cool people on trains. We designed only what we found interesting, challenging and beautiful. In short, without any concern for trends or fashion seasons, we designed garments we wanted to wear and that respected the delicacy of the fabric.

Once we had the designs, we set out prototyping. This was long, time-consuming and sometimes rage-inducing, but the end result always brought so much joy that we would sometimes not believe it was real. The excitement of seeing and wearing something that had existed only in our minds is indescribable.

OUR FABRICS

When it comes to fabrics, we did our absolute best to find materials that were beautiful, textured, and a bit rare. We have sourced them from either Cloth House or Merchant & Mills, because we trust their sourcing. Sadly we cannot yet have access to the whole production line of these materials but we can tell you that they come from India and Japan. We only use natural fibres.

Behind Quiet Grey Atelier you will find only us, two women that somehow met each other not in the sunny weather of their home countries but in beautiful, brutal, chaotic Paris. Our friendship wove itself out of a mutual love for art, beauty and crafting. We decided to create Quiet Grey Atelier together in an effort to showcase the beauty of the sewing craft away from the noise of fashion trends. All you see was made by us, gently, quietly, carefully. We have created all the photography, design and copy; and of course we sew all the pieces ourselves, handcrafting them especially for you in our atelier. We hope they will bring you as much joy as they bring us.

A word on Sizing

When creating the pattern pieces for our garments, we made them to our size for the simple reason that we were the ones testing them. This is the size currently available on the website.

We decided to start with only one size because grading patterns takes time, experience and an investment we were not able to make when launching our small store. We are set on offering more sizes but we want to create them carefully, paying attention to the different morphologies and taking the time to test the results on real humans.
We do not want to create clothes that fit no one by rushing this process.

We promise to come back with news on more sizes soon. We count on your kindness to bear with us in the meantime.
